The Trieste Karst, due to its unique geological features, is rich in caves and is therefore a symbolic place for geology and, of course, speleology. The karst caves have provided shelter since ancient times for both animals, such as the cave bear, and prehistoric humans, of whom numerous traces have been found in many caves. Thus, the caves of the Karst are also an important site of archaeological and paleontological interest.
Among the over 2,700 caves in the Karst, many are of great beauty and scientific and archaeological interest, with the most tourist-friendly one being the Grotta Gigante, which embodies all these characteristics.
